Hi Black Opal Direct. Is the machine in the photo the CabKing six inch? The wheels look too close for it to be the CabKing eight inch.
Would be interested to know your considerations re purchase in the 6 inch diameter range for a semi-hobby opal cutter of twenty plus years. I have an original Jack S Taylor silicon carbide eight inch unit I purchased 25 years ago from an elder who said he couldn’t see enough to keep cutting. I surmise it was made in the 50’s or 60’s.
It has been a hugely rewarding machine but I might upgrade and give the JST to my son. Thanks Justin for sharing your enthusiasm and deep knowledge of opal – mining, cutting and valuing. A rare thing in any field. Regards , Greg Z

I have just emigrated to the Sunshine Coast of Australia with a job. Wanted to get your perspective of how a true beginner that used just dremmel to create carvings in wood would get started in with this hobby. Is this machine the very starting point?
