Friends of BOD: Georgia & Beau

Meet Georgia Dostal, founder of Balanced Ballerinas, director of GC Dance and close friend of BOD.
We spent an afternoon with Georgia and her gorgeous son Beau to capture the special bond between mother and child—adorned with some of our beautiful opal jewelry pieces, of course, Mother Nature meets Mother’s Day!

How has motherhood changed you?
Motherhood has completely transformed me in ways I never expected. I was prepared for the juggle of responsibilities, but nothing could have prepared me for the feeling of having my heart walking around outside my body at all times. The depth of love I feel for my son is unlike anything I’ve ever known—I didn’t realise it was possible to love someone this much. It’s softened me, strengthened me, and given me a whole new perspective on what truly matters.

Has Beau found a love for movement within your studio yet?
Beau has definitely found a love for movement within the studio – he’s always walking on his demi-pointe, copying the dancers! He’s grown up watching ballet classes, hearing the music, and being surrounded by so much joy and energy. While he’s still little, I can already see how much he enjoys moving his body—although he prefers more upbeat classical tunes than the slow ones. I’m not sure if he’ll ever formally dance, but I just love that he’s growing up in an environment that celebrates movement, creativity, and self-care.

You have a natural affinity for nurturing and wellness through dance. Would you say motherhood has amplified this even more?
Absolutely. Motherhood has deepened my understanding of just how hard it can be for mums to prioritise themselves, especially when it comes to something as seemingly simple as getting to class. I now see the invisible load so many mothers carry—juggling responsibilities, managing schedules, and constantly putting others first.
As a teacher, this has made me even more empathetic and understanding. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to carve out time for yourself, but I also know how essential it is. Taking that one hour to move, breathe, and reconnect isn’t just about ballet—it’s about refilling your cup so you don’t burn out. And when we take care of ourselves, we show up as even better mothers, partners, and humans.
A special note from Ruth~
Mothering is something we’ve all done and experienced in different ways. Taking classes with Georgia for the best part of a decade, I’ve been nurtured and fulfilled by both the practice and her mothering (which, by the way, she was doing long before Beau!). Class continues to inform how I approach jewelry design—from soft lines that echo the grace of movement to the precision needed to ensure each piece feels good to wear and lasts long after us. If you are (or were) a dancer, ever dreamed of being one, or have a dancer in your life, give Georgia a follow on Instagram: @thebalancedballerina.

How can one not be impressed with your delightful take on the loveliness of motherhood and, at the same time, the timeless beauty of fine opals…with a nod to the disciplined and devoted life of a professional ballerina.
