Tax ID

Why Does US Customs Require Your EIN, SSN, or CBP Number (TaxID)?

Due to recent changes in US tariff regulations, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requires specific identifying information for shipments entering the USA. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Identity Verification:
    • Customs requires an Employer Identification Number (EIN), Social Security Number (SSN), or a previously issued CBP Number to verify your identity and ensure you’re eligible to receive imported goods.
    • This was previously required only for shipments over US$2,000, but due to recent changes, it now applies to all shipments valued over US$800.

How You Can Provide This Information:

You have two convenient options to ensure your package smoothly clears customs:

  • Option 1: Provide at Checkout (Recommended)
    • Entering your EIN, SSN, or CBP number during checkout will help your package move swiftly through customs without delays.
  • Option 2: Wait for FedEx Contact
    • If you’d rather not provide these details during checkout, you can wait until FedEx contacts you directly via email with instructions and a form to complete electronically.
    • Should FedEx not contact you promptly or if you have difficulty filling out the form, please email the attached PDF form directly to paperwork@fedex.com. Remember to include your FedEx tracking number clearly in both the subject line and email body.

Important Reminder:

  • Ensure this paperwork is completed and returned to FedEx within 5 days of your shipment’s arrival in the US.
  • Failure to provide this information promptly may result in your package being returned and additional shipping charges.

Thanks for your cooperation as we navigate these new customs procedures together!
