Our Approach to Sustainability

Lightning Ridge Australia Mining

We believe beautiful gems should carry a beautiful story—one that values ethical practices, supports local communities, and protects the environment for generations to come.

To us, sustainability goes beyond the land. It’s not only about responsible mining, but also about sustaining the communities that opal mining supports and nourishes. That means championing fair work, long-term economic opportunity, and respectful partnerships with those closest to the source.

The World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) defines sustainability in alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Within this framework, the jewelry industry holds a unique position to serve as a catalyst for economic and social development—particularly in the countries where gemstones are mined.

Caring for the Environment

Environmental sustainability has long been central to opal mining in Australia. For decades, mining activity has been strictly regulated by each state’s mines department, with designated areas for exploration and tight controls on leases and prospecting. Miners work in partnership with landowners to ensure the land is respected—both during and after mining.

At Lightning Ridge, much of the opal field lies within the Narran-Warrambool Reserve, where additional rules apply. Claims are limited in size and duration, and only individuals—not corporations—are permitted to hold them. Large-scale mining is not allowed, reducing the overall environmental impact.

When mining ends, every claim must be fully rehabilitated. This includes filling in all holes, removing any remaining machinery or materials, and restoring the site to its original state. A security deposit is collected at the start of each claim, which is only refunded once rehabilitation is complete. In addition to individual responsibilities, the Lightning Ridge Miners Association undertakes broader environmental rehabilitation efforts across the field.
