Sometimes the universe reveals itself in the most unexpected places. This opal holds a tiny nucleus at its base, radiating outward like the moment of creation—the Big Bang.
The imagery this opal evokes can vary wildly from person to person. Some might see the birth of Jesus, others a sunrise, or even the Northern Lights. One person even said it looked like the Eye of Sauron. But in the eyes of opal professionals, this pattern is called Asteria.
Asteria is a rare pattern in opal that showcases an appearance of small explosions that protrude outwards. This is another example of Asteria pattern:
This opal may not have been forming during the beginning of time, but when I look into the heart of the opal, I feel like I am experiencing life before there was humankind — and yes, this is just my imagination. Due to opals vast appearances, it has the power to fuel our imaginations, whilst romanticising the soul.
This Asteria patterned nobby was found in Lightning Ridge from a mining field called '8 Mile' and is one of the richest deposits known to Lighting Ridge. Some of the most amazing opals have been found from this field including an unbelievable harlequin patterned black opal found 30 years ago. It is such a beautiful phenomenon, the way nature produces color and pattern. And though we would love to predict where specific patterns are formed and how, it is still a mystery. Every opal is different in appearance, brightness, pattern, color, body tone, type, origin and size. All of these factors determine an opals value, and is an ode to their unique expression of nature.
Every opal has its own story to tell, and will speak to everyone differently. Some say they have an energy that can enrich lives. In our bias opinion, we believe that opal is a very happy and intriguing gemstone, making us extremely lucky to handle them everyday.
