What is that opal worth? What will your $ get you?

There is some serious skill involved in spotting a good deal in opal. So much so that people like myself have built their careers around it. But how do opal buyers understand what they’re paying for?

Many different factors can raise the value of opal, but what exactly does that look like?

After working with opal for over 30 years, I can tell the difference between a good deal and a waste of time, but opal is a notoriously hard gem to judge!

Today, we’ll sort through some of the Black Opal Direct inventory, as well as my secret stash, to find out what you can expect to get with your money. After chatting about the value of opal, some of you had questions on exactly what that looks like.

Starting at five dollars and running the bill up to some $25,000 gems, you’ll see the key differences that make an opal worth your buck or not.

How much do you have to spend to get some color? When can you expect to get a gem? What makes the price of some opals so high?

We’ll be tackling these questions, and more, in this week’s video. We’ll be showing you a bunch of opals too, of course!

Did we mention we’re giving away a jar of opal-fever remedy, too?

  1. He has taught me that you can take the ugliest roughest piece of rock and with skill make something very beautiful out of it.
