From the moment this rough opal hit the wheel, I knew it wasn’t going to give itself up easily. What followed was one of the most stressful cutting sessions I have had in a long time. Why? Because there was inclusions everywhere.
The inclusions running through this gem had me second guessing every single decision from start to finish. Do I go deeper and risk losing that incredible green and blue colour? Do I play it safe and leave the flaws sitting inside? Or do I take the biggest risk of my cutting life and keep pushing until I have a perfectly clean gem in my hand?
There is no easy answer when the colour is this good and the stakes are this high. But after a long fight, the result of my choices made me very proud. Take a look for yourself and let me know in the comments whether I made the right decisions.
The Final Result

Justin, I really don’t know what the copyte needles look like and I don’t know exactly what I should be looking for. Could you do a quick video and somehow enlarge it or zoom in on a stone that has copyte needles?
I have learned so much watching your videos. Thank you for what you do.
