Will this tiny opal cut $1000 gem?

No bigger than a dime; can I cut a gem out of this tiny opal?

I thought I’d challenge myself this week by cutting this small nobby that I’ve had sitting in my stash.

But first, coffee.

Now that we’ve got the most crucial thing out of the way let’s cut this tiny opal!

This nobby looks like it has a clean color bar that could face well. It’ll be a bit of a stretch, but let’s hope I can do it.

Does the potch go right through the color? Will the stone get too small for my fingers? Is this going to be a total flop?!

By the end of the video I end up with a beautiful gem, but it wasn’t what I had planned.

The final opals

Our first opal is a 0.55-carat black opal that ended up being a nice stone with low value; great for anyone wanting to add something small to their collection or for a ring.

The second gem, our 4.68-carat black opal, turned out beautifully; gorgeous bright color with some fascinating patterns.

Don’t forget to enter our giveaway!

All entry details are available in this blog post — good luck.

Competition closes 11 pm September 2, 2020 (AEST)
