Gem black opal refers to the highest grade and most expensive opal in the world.
Black opal comes from only one main source in the world and that is Lightning Ridge Australia.
In The form of nobby’s there are no other place in the world that has opal formation like nobby opal. Black opal has a natural dark appearance with a black potch backing and a layer or color bar on top of the potch to give the opal a very rare and appealing allure.
Black opal is one of the hardest types of opal to cut, being so dense in body tone that no light can pass through it. Finding impurities can be very difficult and when being cut can be transformed into a piece of real beauty or a piece of mud with no color. The cutting of black opal should be taken very slowly, one carat may be worth $20,000 so as you are grinding you could be loosing thousands of dollars.
Black opal comes in weight from 0.20 carats to 300 to 400 carats. The larger pieces a re very rare.
If you have been lucky enough to cut black opal and had some good results you will soon realize that black opal is the best by a long way.
Gem black opal usually comes in the colors of green, orange, red and the best, red blue. All of these colors can interchange and no opal will ever be the same. Each piece is as individual as you. Red and blue is the most valuable.
Black opal is a great investment because of its rarity and the fact that it is running out. The Australian Government has made opal mining very hard for the smaller miner who doesn’t have a lot of money to throw around at machinery and regulations. Also Diesel is so expensive that it cost more to move the opal bearing dirt than the yield of opal supply.
Bigger miners that have set themselves up by making a few lucky strike of opal have a much better chance of finding opal because they can pay for regulation.
Giving the smaller opal miner little or no chance.
Luckily there are still a few miners that are giving it a go and beating the odds.
There is still production coming out of Lightning Ridge but only in a small trickle
